What is online teacher certification in secondary education?

Online teacher certification in secondary education is the process by which aspiring educators earn licensure to teach within their chosen area after completing required coursework, exams and other criteria.

The secondary education master’s degree is ideal for individuals who already have a bachelor's degree in any field and want to further their knowledge in education for grades 6–12.

What will I learn in an online teacher certification in secondary education program?

The program connects theory and practice through quality instruction from ASU faculty – experts in the field who are actively engaged in the educational research community. The degree includes internship and residency experiences in schools and learning environments. These professional experiences are carefully designed to provide the support you’ll need to be successful in today’s rapidly evolving educational environment.

This online degree also leads to teacher certification via two routes for added flexibility.

  • Traditional certification: This route allows you to take courses online while conducting internships and residencies on-site in a local school.
  • Alternative pathways certification: This route provides certification for individuals already working as a teacher of record on an Arizona Alternative Teaching Certificate (or equivalent in other states). If you’re interested in this route, you must secure a full-time teaching position before starting the program, allowing you to immediately put coursework into practice.

Is it worth it to be certified in secondary education?

Yes. Most schools require teachers to obtain state certification in order to teach grades 6–12. Additionally, teacher certification demonstrates your readiness to enter the classroom as a subject matter expert in your chosen area.

If you enroll in a program leading to initial teacher certification and commit to teaching in Arizona after graduation, you may be eligible for the Arizona Teachers Academy at ASU tuition scholarship.

Professional licensure and certification

ASU offers programs that lead to professional licensure with the state of Arizona and may allow graduates to be eligible for licensure in other states. Please check the professional licensure list for Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College to determine if this program meets requirements in your state. Note that not all programs within Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College lead to professional licensure. Contact our enrollment team for more information: ASUeducation@asu.edu.

Secondary education online teacher certification courses

The secondary education curriculum combines core coursework aligned with teacher certification requirements. You’ll also take a range of elective courses and participate in professional experiences in middle and high school settings. These educational experiences will prepare you to teach grades 6–12. You’ll also complete a final applied research project in which you’ll have the opportunity to evaluate and identify an education challenge and design an intervention within your own classroom.

Additionally, you’ll select a subject area and take a related methods course. Approved subject areas include, but aren’t limited to: American Government and political science, biological science, chemistry, Earth and space sciences, economics, English, French, general science, geography, history, mathematics, physical education, physics and Spanish.
