The master’s in secondary education is a Master of Education (MEd). With an MEd degree, you can enter or advance your teaching career by gaining knowledge and insight into the current challenges facing educators, administrators and learners today.

What’s the difference between a master’s in secondary education degree and certification?

 

Formal teaching certification is required for aspiring educators to teach across grades 6-12. This degree does not lead to teacher certification. The ideal learner may already be working in a school or other type of learning environment. Others may be students or alumni from the teacher certification graduate certificate program or students enrolled in the MEd secondary education  – teacher certification program who no longer want to pursue certification.

Professional licensure and certification

This degree program does not lead to teacher certification; students will not receive an institutional recommendation. Students interested in certification should pursue this degree with the teacher certification concentration.

Online courses for the Master of Education in secondary education

You’ll take a variety of courses to prepare you to educate children in grades 6-12. This includes a series of educator scholar community courses designed to enhance your teaching strategies with new skills and abilities in your areas of interest as an educator. You’ll also complete a final applied research project in which you’ll have the opportunity to evaluate and identify an education challenge and design an intervention within the classroom.

Additionally, you’ll select a subject area and take a related methods course. Approved subject areas include American Government and political science, biological science, chemistry, Earth and space sciences, economics, English, French, general science, geography, history, mathematics, physical education, physics and Spanish.
