Determine your student path
Military students come from diverse backgrounds, bringing a breadth of experience to ASU. You’ll want to understand what type of student you are and the benefits you’ll be using before applying to ASU.
In step 2 below, explore the student types, including:
- First-year students who haven’t previously attended a college or university.
- Transfer students who have attended college or university prior to using military benefits.
- Transfer students who used their military benefits at a previous college or institution.
- Graduate students who have their bachelor’s degree.
Explore eligible benefits, including:
- Tuition Assistance for active military (Step 3)
- Veterans benefits through the GI Bill® (Step 4)
- Spouse or dependent benefits (Step 4)
Depending on the benefit you’ll be using, it can take a couple of months for approval, so it’s important to start this process early.
Identify your student type and admission requirements
Depending on your educational background, you’ll have different admission requirements. Explore the student types below:

Explore Tuition Assistance for active military
Tuition Assistance is a Department of Defense program available to active military that isn’t administered or monitored by the VA. Your unit’s Education Service Officer can answer questions and provide relevant documentation. TA rules vary by service branch and sometimes between different units, so work closely with your Education Service Officer.
To start using TA, you will need to:
- Apply to ASU. Do this task early — at least four to six weeks before the start of classes.
- Meet with your Education Service Officer.
- Create an Evaluated Degree Plan, which shows all required courses for degree completion. Both undergraduate and graduate students will work with their academic advisors to complete this.
- Enroll in classes and get a class schedule through My ASU.
- Complete the Benefits Responsibility form.
- Get a tuition receipt through the Finances tab in My ASU.
- Obtain and submit your approved and funded TA voucher to the ASU Student Accounts office either by email at sponsorbilling@asu.edu or by fax at 480-965-9242. Verify your military branch approves your TA by the first day of class. A $75 third-party fee is applied to your account when your voucher is received.
For a full checklist around this program, visit: Tuition Assistance.
Our military enrollment team can assist you by phone at 844-353-7953 or email enrollmentonline@asu.edu.
Review GI Bill® benefits for veterans and military dependents
Veterans and military dependents are able to use the GI Bill® for their education at ASU.
Veteran students will need to complete several steps, including:
- Applying for or updating your VA benefits.
- Verifying your program is VA approved at ASU.
- Apply to ASU.
- Receive academic advising and register for classes.
- Complete ASU documents for VA benefits processing:
- VA issued Certificate of Eligibility.
- VA Benefits Responsibility form, which notifies ASU of your intent to use VA education benefits as you start school.
- VA Enrollment Activity form, which notifies ASU of your intent to use VA benefits each semester.
- Prior Credit Evaluation form, which helps us determine if any of your prior courses are transferable credits.
Military spouses and dependents have two pathways to attending ASU using educational benefits:
- Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits can be transferred to an eligible dependent. You can request a transfer through milConnect.
- The Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance program is also available to eligible survivors and spouses. You can apply for that benefit online.
Once you’re enrolled, you’ll be able to register for LIA 294 — a first-year success course. Additionally, we host welcome events on campus for students who can travel to campus.
GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government website at http://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.

- Tell us about your school history.
- Report your grades or notify ASU that you’ll send a transcript.
- Help us determine your Arizona residency.
