What is the study of human factors in forensic science?
Human factors in forensic science is a field of study that examines the fit between people and the environments in which they work. Because human factors can significantly affect the accuracy and reliability of forensic science decision-making, experts strive to positively affect work performance by improving individuals’ working environments. By addressing human factors, crime laboratories and forensic examiners can enhance the objectivity and transparency of their work and, thereby, promote the fair administration of justice. In the forensic sciences, human factors can include:
- Effects of fatigue, stress and human memory on the evaluation of evidence.
- How examiners communicate their results to others.
- Laboratory protocols that affect error rates.
- Psychological processes that affect the way examiners interpret physical evidence.
- Tools and technologies that enhance the accuracy and reliability of forensic analysis.
The knowledge and skills you’ll develop
In this certificate program, the first of its kind to be offered online, you’ll learn how to apply psychological theory, such as cognitive and motivational biases, expectancies and communication, to the collection and evaluation of forensic evidence.
