Join ASU international students at a #1 university

ASU is ranked one of the best universities in the world and the #1 university for innovation in the U.S. for 10 years in a row, according to U.S. News & World Report, 2025. Online international students are those who are not currently citizens, permanent residents or refugees in the U.S. and attending ASU through our online campus modality.

Follow the steps below to apply as an international student at ASU Online.

Note: Online international students are not issued an F-1 visa or I-20  to travel to the U.S. for school.

1

Review international student admission requirements

Review the admission requirements below. All students must meet our English proficiency requirements (see Step 3).

Some programs may require higher admission and English proficiency requirements and they may consider a minimum ACT or SAT score. Review your program’s specific requirements through our degree search

First-year students

First-year students must have a minimum 3.00 GPA from a secondary school. A completed high school diploma or certificate will need to be presented to ASU.

Students applying while in high school must submit 9-11 grade coursework. If you’ve completed high school, then coursework from grades 10-12 is required.

Transfer students

You’re considered a transfer student if you have 12 or more transferable credits completed post-high school. You must have a minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA. You must meet one of the following requirements:

  • If you have 12-23 transferable credits you must also meet first-year student admission requirements.
  • If you have 24 or more transferable credits, then you must meet the minimum 2.50 cumulative transfer GPA.
  • Students with an associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited higher education institution must have a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA if you’re an Arizona resident or a 2.50 cumulative GPA for nonresidents.

Apply to earn a graduate degree as an international student:

  • You’re required to have a minimum of the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a 3.00 GPA in the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of undergraduate studies. However, if you’re unable to meet this GPA requirement, your application may still be considered.

See how your education meets admission requirements

ASU recognizes that educational systems are different across the world. To help you determine if your academic credentials are comparable to a U.S. high school degree and to understand the documents that need to be submitted for admission, please review the requirements for the country from which your credential was earned.

Review international student English language proficiency requirements

If you’re a citizen of an English-speaking country, proof of English proficiency isn’t required.

If you aren’t a citizen of an English-speaking country, you must provide proof of English proficiency.

Contact an enrollment coach at 866-277-6589 if you have any questions about admission requirements for international applicants.

Apply to ASU as an international student

International applicants who currently reside outside the U.S. should select the visa type “JN” when completing the application. This designation indicates you will not be entering the U.S. and no financial guarantee documents will be required.

Student visas are not available to online students. Students who are currently residing in the U.S. under an F-1 student visa may not enroll in online programs.

6

Submit your transcripts

Official transcripts are certified copies of official documents from each secondary school, college, university and/or technical school attended. Do not submit photocopies, notarized copies, faxes or scans of your transcripts.

To process an ASU application, all international records must be submitted in the original language accompanied by an official English translation. Translations must be literal, complete versions of original records, and a university, a government official or an official translation service must translate the documents. Students cannot perform their own translation.

Professional third-party evaluations

We provide credential evaluations of your secondary and post-secondary academic records at no extra cost. If your academic credentials have previously been evaluated by a third-party, we will consider course-by-course evaluations from the four agencies below:

An evaluation does not take place of the official academic records you must submit. However, if the evaluating agency includes the academic records they used to complete the evaluation and indicates the evaluation was based on official or authenticated records, we may accept those documents as official.
