Students in the sustainability minor from the School of Sustainability will learn about the concept of sustainability and how it may be used to develop solutions to pressing issues affecting society, organizations and the world. The minor introduces sustainability principles and explains how sustainability can be applied to all academic disciplines and professional fields. Students will explore the challenges of sustainability within human institutions, organizations, cultures and technology, and in local, national and international contexts. The minor is intended to draw from and inform any major in the university.

Job candidates with both sustainability skills and a solid professional background in another field are receiving job offers because they bring useful and much-needed combinations of skills to organizations.

In a survey of about 200 managers and executives, 65 percent of small-company respondents and 87 percent of large-firm respondents said they would consider a sustainability concentration when making a hiring decision. Survey participants also said sustainability-related topics should be taught to all managers and executives. Please note, students may only apply to a minor in combination with an existing degree program. Please speak with your academic advisor to ensure this minor is applicable with your major.

A student wishing to pursue a specific minor should consult an academic advisor in the unit offering that minor to ensure that an appropriate set of courses is taken. The student should also consult an academic advisor in the college or department of the major to make sure the college or department of the major allows the recognition of the minor.

Note: Certain major and minor combinations may be deemed inappropriate either by the college or department of the major or minor. Courses taken as part of a minor may not count toward both the major degree and the minor. Please contact the department for more information.
