What is biomedical engineering?
In a society with an aging population, health challenges increase the need for professionals with multidisciplinary backgrounds. Biomedical engineering is a field of study that bridges the gap between engineering (materials science, electrical and chemical) and the life sciences (biology, genetics and chemistry).
This online biomedical engineering degree is the first of its kind in the nation. Accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), this program empowers graduates to make sustainable and ethical contributions in the field.
What can you do with a biomedical engineering degree?
This program prepares you for interdisciplinary roles in a growing field. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for bioengineers and biomedical engineers is projected to grow 10% from 2021 to 2031, which is faster than average for all occupations. Industries with opportunities for biomedical engineers include:
- Biomanufacturing.
- Disease modeling.
- Drug discovery.
- Medical and pharmaceutical device design.
- Rehabilitative technology and bioinformatics.
- Regenerative medicine.
Additionally, coursework is designed to provide you with the knowledge needed for graduate and professional studies in engineering, medicine, business, law and more.
Professional licensure and certification
ASU academic programs are designed to prepare students to apply for applicable licensure or certification in Arizona. Completion of an ASU program may not meet education requirements for license or certification in another state. If you are planning to pursue professional licensure or certification in a state other than Arizona, it is strongly recommended that you visit our professional licensure page for contact information of the appropriate licensing entity to seek information and guidance regarding licensure or certification requirements.
Will my diploma say ‘online’?
No, Arizona State University’s diplomas don’t specify whether you earn your degree online or in person. All diplomas and transcripts simply say “Arizona State University.”
Biomedical engineering courses
Courses in this math-intensive program focus on engineering and biology topics ranging from biomechanics and bioengineering product design to microbial bioprocess engineering and microbiology. In addition to the required core courses, you can explore areas of the biomedical field as you earn 15 engineering elective credits over five classes.
You’ll also complete a two-part senior design project which allows you to collaborate with a real organization or business. You’ll work in a team to engineer a solution for a current health challenge, including conceptualizing, designing, building and testing a prototype.
Courses may include:
The jobs can you get with an online biomedical engineering degree
Biomedical engineers work in a variety of industries, such as bioinformatics and data science, FDA and manufacturing compliance, genetic engineering, regulatory affairs and more. The combination of technical, analytical and interpersonal skills you’ll gain also prepares you for leadership roles within organizations. Potential career paths you can pursue include, but aren’t limited to:
Biomedical Engineer
Human Factors Engineer
Microsystem Engineer
