Why study genetics, cell and developmental biology?

This program is the first of its kind to integrate three related areas of life science research:

  • Cell biology.
  • Developmental biology.
  • Genetics.

The combined study of genetics, cell biology and developmental biology can help lead to a better understanding of diseases, regeneration and aging. This concentration requires coursework at the intersection of genetics, genomes and developmental biology. Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared for graduate and professional degrees in genetics, medicine and genomes.

This bachelor’s degree can also be completed as part of an Accelerated Master’s program. When accepted, you can earn a master’s degree in as little as one year after completing your undergraduate degree. This opportunity saves you time and money while giving you advanced knowledge in your field. Applicable master's degrees include:

What are cell biology and developmental biology?

Genetics is the study of genes and the science of heredity or traits passed down from one generation to the next. As you study genetics in this program, you’ll examine the blueprints of life and critical information such as what makes living things unique, how diseases develop and how and when organisms live, survive and thrive.

Similarly, developmental biology uses both genetics and cell biology to understand how multicellular organisms grow, develop and interact to produce a whole new individual from a single cell. This program provides you with an understanding of various developmental changes that organisms undergo throughout life.

What will I learn in this genetics degree?

You’ll explore different areas of biology and examine biological questions of interest. You’ll also gain knowledge of fundamental concepts in biological sciences, chemistry, physics and statistics. Additionally, you’ll develop the scientific process and critical thinking skills necessary for a variety of different careers.

This program is ideal for students interested in studying classical genetics, genomics, molecular biology, developmental biology, evolution, biochemistry, cellular biology or regenerative medicine. This concentration is also a good fit if you’re interested in epidemiology. Check out our article on how to become an epidemiologist.

Will my diploma say ‘online’?

No, Arizona State University’s diplomas don’t specify whether you earn your degree online or in person. All diplomas and transcripts simply say “Arizona State University.”

Genetics, cell and developmental biology courses

Courses are designed to give you a strong foundational knowledge of the fundamental concepts found within the biological sciences, genetics, chemistry, physics and statistics. Your biological sciences courses include a suite of innovative learning technologies and interactive virtual labs. One example of this is Dreamscape Learn, a collaboration between Dreamscape Immersive and ASU that takes you on virtual reality 3D and 2D experiences. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in lab experiences in person on ASU’s Tempe campus over the summer.
