For many students, an online degree program will give them the flexibility they need to attain their degree. As a result, students should be aware of the different support systems that universities have in place for online student support. Here are certain questions to consider asking your enrollment advisor when thinking about an online program.

How can I tackle work, life and school all at the same time?

For most online students, particularly those who are going to be maintaining a full-time job, setting aside dedicated time each week can keep them on track. Many online programs, including Arizona State University, provide advisors and coaches to support students throughout the program.

What if I need technical support?

While many online programs may require you to use unfamiliar tools, or install new technology on your computers, they also provide several different tools to help students learn about the technology, and how to use it for their classes. Like ASU Online, some universities may offer things like online tutoring.

What type of orientation is offered for the online program?

Before committing to a program, you should ensure that the university has a formal orientation in place for online students. ASU Online students are taken through a step-by-step tutorial on what to expect.

How can I get involved in the larger university community?

Many students who are enrolled in an online degree program are interested in staying connected with their university. For example, ASU Online students can join a wide variety of social media groups to stay connected. Be sure and ask your enrollment advisor what offerings are provided.

How much time should I expect to dedicate to earning my degree?

Although online programs have a different layout than traditional courses, a substantial time commitment is still required. For ASU Online, where the courses are structured into seven-and-a-half-week sessions, students should expect to spend six hours a week on coursework for every course credit.

By having a strong understanding of online programs and how they differ from traditional on-ground programs, students can feel more comfortable knowing what to expect, and how to reach out for support when they need it.
