Joining organizations can help you build long-lasting relationships, demonstrate noteworthy skills and gain invaluable opportunities to engage with the diverse culture, community and leadership of the Sun Devil community. Alaya Walton and Aimée Vitaglian are two ASU Online students who made getting involved a priority and are using their experience to make a positive impact on Sun Devil life.

Uniting students around the country

Walton, a software engineering student, found her path to involvement by chance.

“I’m a part of the Sun Devils Connect group,” she said. “One day I saw a post about starting an organization for an online student body and I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”

A student body president in high school, Walton reignited her interest in uniting students by joining an online student leadership group that advocates for the online student body.

Soon after joining, she interviewed for a leadership role to take on more responsibility.

In her role, Walton has an opportunity to lead events and workshops while bridging the communication gap among students across the country. She is also a member of Delta Sigma, an exclusively virtual sorority connecting ASU women in sisterhood across borders.

Using professional experience to support students

Vitaglian is a nontraditional liberal studies and organizational leadership student who has years of experience in computer science, business, film and media studies. Though many recommended she join OSG, she felt she could make a greater impact by joining the Career and Professional Development Services Student Advisory Board (CPDS).

“I feel I bring a unique perspective to CPDS,” Vitaglian said. “I believe there are a lot of students like me and I want to ensure there is a voice to represent nontraditional students.”

One of her goals as a board member is to enhance students’ ability to enter the technology and media streaming space. Though she joined to help other students advance, she found that her involvement has benefited her personally.

“After joining the board, I feel more engaged as a student,” Vitaglian said. “I feel more connected to the Sun Devil Nation.”
