Computer science skills are in high demand in the United States. In 2015, there were almost 10 times more computer science-related positions available in the United States than there were computer science graduates. This means companies across the US are hungry for computer-savvy college graduates, and their demand for computer science degree holders is only likely to increase. In 2013, the White House predicted that the market would create 1.4 million computer science jobs, and that the 400,000 computer science graduates produced by colleges would fall short of the demand. With the industry of computer science ranking as the highest paying job for college graduates in 2016, the field of computer science is a great place to be for people seeking a fast track into the job market.

We want you … to be a computer scientist! The computer science and technology sector is making strides to increase gender parity and diversity in the field.Women make up 18 percent of computer science graduates across the nation and are estimated to represent 20 percent of the computer science workforce by 2025, according to one study. Unfortunately, the number of women in computer-oriented jobs has declined since 1990, from 32 to 25 percent according to a Pew Research Center study. However, schools and extracurricular programming are seeking to reverse this trend by introducing students to computer and STEM skills early in life through programs such as Girls Who Code.

Arizona State University Ira A Fulton Schools of Engineering professor Andrea Richa said ASU seeks to increase diversity in engineering subjects such as computer science through community efforts such as the Women in Computer Science club as well as mentor programs and scholarships.

“In engineering there are people from other countries even at the undergrad level,” Richa said. “I would like to see more diversity, however. Every female student, students of diverse origins or races are all very welcome in the computer science field.”

How do I get a computer science job?

Half of all STEM jobs require a four-year degree or higher, particularly the high earning positions and jobs in metropolitan environments according to a study by the Brookings Institute. For people seeking higher earning jobs, or a life in an urban environment, a degree is key to living their idea lifestyle.

The Fulton Schools of Engineering and ASU Online have worked together to meet this need, not only by creating a host of computer skill boosting degrees online so students can get a computer science job of their dreams, but by working with Coursera to host a new kind of master of computer science online degree. The Master of Computer Science (MCS) is taught by the same award-winning faculty as on-ground programs at ASU, and features basics of computer science such as data management, machine learning, visualization and algorithms, to work with cutting edge technologies such as artificial intelligence in specialized fields such as bioinformatics and communications.

Highlights for the computer science master’s degree include:

  • Competitive cost structure.
  • Theory and applied courses.
  • 1.5 -year program.
  • 7.5 week, fully-online courses.

Like all ASU Online students, computer science master’s students get a leg up on finding a career after earning their degree through career coaches at the university who help students identify career paths and positions that match their passions.
