What is integrative health care?

Integrative health care is a patient-focused approach to wellness that promotes traditional medicine, along with treatments that support the whole person. Some factors emphasized in an integrative health degree include:

  • Mental fitness.
  • Social connection.
  • Spiritual well-being.

Instead of focusing exclusively on holistic medicine, integrative health degree holders learn how traditional and alternative treatments can work together in a coordinated way.

What will I learn in this integrative health degree?

Integrative health degree students focus on scientific courses, as well as complementary approaches to wellness. You’ll learn about anatomy, physiology, stress management tools and mind-body therapies. In this program, you’ll focus on three key emphasis areas:

  • Understanding the ethics, legalities and standards of practice of integrative health.
  • Studying different therapies, modalities and practitioners.
  • Developing a holistic approach to wellness that focuses on the mind, body and spirit.

Students in this program must choose one of two tracks. The first track, the Pre-Health Professional Grad School track, includes the core required courses for most graduate programs and is meant for students interested in earning an advanced degree in medicine. The second track, the Nursing and General Health Interest track, includes the prerequisites for ASU’s nursing program and is meant for students looking to pursue a path in nursing. This track is also a great choice for students with a general interest in the overall topic.

This bachelor’s degree can be completed as part of an Accelerated Master’s program. When accepted, you can earn a master’s degree in as little as one year after completing your undergraduate degree. This opportunity saves you time and money, while giving you advanced knowledge in your field. Applicable master’s degrees include:

What industries use holistic health?

Holistic health is used in the traditional health care industry and by alternative practitioners. Social service agencies and community centers may also employ holistic health techniques. As an integrative health degree holder, you may consider becoming a patient or care advocate in a medical or nonprofit setting. You may also apply for positions in public policy.

Will my integrative health degree say 'online'?

No, Arizona State University’s diplomas don’t specify whether you earn your degree online or in person. All diplomas and transcripts simply say “Arizona State University.” That’s because ASU Online students learn from the same faculty and receive the same course content as in-person students receive.

Integrative health degree courses

The track you select will influence the curriculum for your integrative health degree. To graduate, you must complete a capstone experience, in which you design a healing environment project.
