How to award CEU’s

How to Apply and Qualify Your Program for Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

ASU Online and Extended Campus approves programs for general Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and awards certificates to individuals.

The CEU is a nationally recognized method of measuring participation in formal, noncredit continuing education programs. CEUs are defined as 10 contact hours of participation equaling one CEU, in an organized continuing education experience and under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction. The primary purpose of CEUs is as a record that can be used to give employers, professional associations, and societies a uniform measure of short-term educational programs completed by an individual. CEUs are not academic credits and cannot be applied toward degree work at institutions of higher education.

Required Steps for Program Approval

At least one month prior to the program start date, follow these CEU request and approval steps:

  1. We will provide the CEU Application Details that describes the application process and includes a link to the CEU Program Information form .
  2. Send the CEU Program Information form with the required signatures indicated on the form, program documentation, and appropriate attachments. We’ll review for approval.

If the program is being initiated by an organization outside of the university with no university faculty affiliation, contact us CEU@asu.edu for further information.

Approval process:

  • Approval or denial of the program is communicated to the program coordinator or course facilitator through the CEU approval memo that, if approved, describes the CEU award process and includes a copy of the completion report.
  • The program coordinator or course facilitator is responsible for tracking the participant’s hours to award CEUs.
  • At the end of the program, the program coordinator or course facilitator will send the CEU Completion Report and remittance for CEUs, if applicable, to ASU Online and Extended Campus.
  • There are two payment options for CEUs:
    • Each participant pays $15, with a check payable to “Arizona State University”.
    • The program pays the CEU fee for the student.
  • ASU Online and Extended Campus will send the CEU certificate to the participant.
