ASU Hybrid Courses
A hybrid course combines face-to-face instruction and web- or computer-based learning in an educational environment that is non-specific as to time and place. Common features of hybrid courses include the delivery of the syllabus, lectures, readings and assignments on web pages; discussions and presentations through online message boards, e-mail and chat software; interactive tutorials and labs; and on-line assessments (or any combination of the above). In a hybrid class, a significant part of the course interaction takes place online and students can expect to spend at least as much time as they would in an on-campus section of the course.

The following image shows a sample class as listed in the online course schedule using ASU class search http://www.asu.edu/schedule. This listing is discussed in more detail below.

Scheduled Meeting Times
The ASU class schedule identifies two meeting times for hybrid classes. The first line provides the face-to-face meeting times as well as the building and room where the "on-ground" class meets. The second line provides information about the online portion of the course. If the face-to-face Days & Times and Location are yet to be determined, they will be listed as TBA or Internet.
The best way to determine if the course is Hybrid, Face to Face or Online, is to identify the Instruction Mode listed in the Class Details. To find this information click on the course section. (Figure 2)

Important Additional Details
Additional information about the course on the Course Details page includes the following:
  • Important Enrollment details such as required pre-requisite courses
  • Class Availability
  • Any fees associated with the class.
  • Information about hybrid classes, such as the following:

In general, a hybrid course will require you to be "in attendance" the same amount of time as a face-to-face course, yet will offer more flexibility in when and how you use that time. Your instructor should outline in the course syllabus the attendance requirements for that particular hybrid course. Some instructors may require individual, self-paced online assignments; some may define a participation rate for online discussions and postings, while others may require small group meetings in online virtual classrooms at set times.

Possible course schedules for hybrid courses include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • For a MWF class, meet face-to-face two days a week and in the online virtual classroom in small groups the third day.
  • For a T TH class, meet face-to-face one day a week and require online readings and discussions on group topics during the week.
  • For a course that meets for three hours one night a week, meet face-to-face for two hours at night and participate in online discussions, meetings or readings for an additional hour each week.
Due to the online component of hybrid classes, all students enrolled in a hybrid course must have the following:
  • Internet access
  • Recommended browser (Internet Explorer 5.0 or above)
  • Active ASURITE account
  • Basic e-mail and web skills

myASU (Blackboard) is Arizona State University's primary course management system. To access Blackboard, open the myASU portal in your web browser. To log on you must have an active ASURITE account, which you can obtain using the information or web pages listed below.
